  • About Us

Obaapa Development Foundation recognizes that gender inequality is the fundamental cause of poverty that significantly derails the development of women and children who are often at the receiving end of the scourge. And the most enduring way to fix this global challenge is to effectively educate, inspire, empower women and girls as well as continuously advocate for change in policies that impede their advancement.

Out of the desire to change this odious narrative by effective campaigning, capacity building and education, and having worked in the development space for several years (producing social documentaries, leading developmental projects/programs; advocating with and connecting Queenmothers to development partners etc), Nanahemaa Adjoa Awindor founded the Obaapa Development Foundation as the social responsibility wing of Premier Productions Ltd. in year 2010, and officially registered it as an NGO in 2013.

Obaapa Development Foundation is a Non-Government Organization established with the aim of supporting the development of women and children in Ghana through advocacy, capacity building, programs, and projects. Generally, ODF is committed to improving the quality of life of women and children.

The Foundation works closely with International and local NGOs, CSOs, government institutions and agencies, traditional leaders, policymakers and media houses to educate, empower women & girls and influence gender policy change. This is done through organizing programs, mobilizing leaders and communities, facilitating dialogues and connecting actors to share ideas, experiences and knowledge on relevant issues.

ODF’s work is grounded in the principles of Human rights contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Goal 4 & 5 of Sustainable Development Goals, and other regional and national instruments such as the African Charter and the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Since its inception, ODF has built a successful track record in its areas of work; and has gained recognition as well as generated significant interest in Ghana especially among Women Cultural Leaders who have been encouraged to be innovative and dynamic in their dealings with their communities.

Notable among the traditional interest groups formed and nurtured by the ODF are the Unity Queens and Advocacy Queens. Unity Queens is a network of amazing Hardworking Queenmothers and Royalty who are empowered to impact their communities positively.

Advocacy Queens is a subgroup of Unity Queens with a special focus on campaigning on key gender issues through community engagement, who devote their Time, Knowledge, Skills, Resources and Finances to empower women and girls across Ghana.

    WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

An ace media personality and a development Queenmother, Nana Adjoa Awindor was already trailblazing in her field of endeavor (Photography, documentary & film production, tv host, Multimedia Trainer, Women and Children Advocate etc) and in the development space working on different development programs and connecting Queenmothers to development partners and embassies as the CEO of Premier Production Limited when she hatched that idea to formally establish an organization that will lead in the advancement of women and girls.

Her vision was to make a difference in the lives of women and children whom she believes are at the center of abuse and discrimination of all kinds.

From that revolutionary idea, Obaapa Development Foundation was founded as the social responsibility wing of Premier Productions Ltd., in year 2010 and registered it in 2013.

Over the years, the foundation has succeeded in reshaping the way community leaders, especially Queenmothers care for their girls by building their capacities in leadership and Cube Convos. ODF further started one of its flagship projects, the Teenage Mothers Back to School Project…

    OUR VISION

To be one of the best references to development and support for women and children in Ghana

    OUR MISSION

To use advocacy, programs and projects aimed at supporting the development of women and children in Ghana to enhance their lives through education, economic empowerment and based on strong moral TEACHINGS.

    COMMITMENT

We commit to work to improve the quality of life ofWomen and Children in Ghana. We will endeavor to empower them with progressive moral training, information sharing and excellent projects through visionary leadership and strong partnership with Community Leaders, Development Partners and the Youth, to build sustainable, strong and dynamic communities.

  • What we do

We partner with relevant bodies to embark on projects, Empowerment and Advocacy programs for women and the youth using a gender mainstreaming approach.

    •  Empowerment

At ODF, we pride ourselves as an organisation in Ghana that coordinates Capacity building and Empowerment programs for Cultural Leaders in Ghana (Especially Queenmothers). Apart from the several trainings offered on various Advocacy issues, ODF and partners have zoomed in to specific topics (with the aim of offering capacity to participants who are expected to impact members of their communities and beyond)

We have done this through the partnership of Commonwealth Secretariat (UK), PATH, Ghana Health Services, Kyberly (USA), UNFPA, UNICEF, PLAN Ghana and The World Vision in Ghana

All forms of Violence against women and girls are a grave abuse and hindrance to the enjoyment of their fundamental human rights. GBV affects all aspects of women’s life – their sovereignty, their productivity, and their capacity to take responsibility for themselves and their children, and subsequently their overall health status and quality of life. Investing in women, the youth and children sets a direct path for reduction if not eradication of gender inequality. Our empowerment programs highlight the dangers of common practices that affect women’s growth as well as equip women with the needed skills and knowledge to realize their rights and determine their life outcomes.

    • Capacity Building

Through workshops, forums, organized training, formal and non-formal education, we aim to build the capacity of women and girls to enable them attain leadership skills, self-reliance and sustainability that enable them to participate fully in the economic and social life of their community and country.

    • Advocacy

Through our programs, we lobby authorities to make Child protection and that of women and girls a priority. We provide authorities with relevant information on related issues.

     Our Advocacy programs focus on:

    • Teenage pregnancy
    • Child Marriage
    • Newborn Care
    • Drug abuse
    • FGM
    • HIV/AIDS
    • Food & Nutrition
    • COVID-19 (most recently)

    • International & Local Conferences

ODF supports local, national and international forums by participating in meetings and workshops that amplify women’s power. The foundation works with diverse women’s groups to generate creativity, working relationships and unity of purpose in advancing women’s leadership and action. One of the outcomes of such gatherings led to the formation of the African Queens and Women Cultural Leaders’ Network (AQWCLN).

    • Education

Currently, one of the major projects being undertaken by the Obaapa Development Foundation is the Teenage Mothers Back to School Project (TMBTSP). The foundation adopted the TMBTSP, an original initiative of the Girl-Child Education Unit of the Atwima Kwanwoma District Education Office with the aim of expanding it into a national project.

With this project, the organization is currently supporting 60 teenage mothers school dropouts with financial, and material needs to continue and complete basic education or acquire vocational skills. This scheme seeks to empower 1,000 teenage mother school dropouts by year 2030. The project is informed by Ghana’s Development Policy Frameworks relating to education as well as principles of social justice and gender equality
