The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has urged traditional leaders to use their authority to end child marriage and gender-based violence in Ghana.

Speaking on his behalf at a meeting with the National House of Chiefs in Manhyia, Kumasi, the Minister said traditional leaders have both the moral and constitutional duty to eliminate harmful cultural practices and promote positive social change.

The engagement, organised in partnership with UNFPA and the Obaapa Development Foundation under the Global Programme to End Child Marriage, highlighted progress made in seven paramount areas—Anfoega, Bongo, Agona Nyakrom, Akwamu, Ave Xevi, Oguaa, and Avatime—where chiefs have already declared an end to child marriage.

The President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi III, pledged full support and personally offered to fund the education of a survivor who shared her story. UNFPA Country Director, Dr. Winfred Ochan, commended the collaboration and assured continued support, including educational opportunities and vocational training for survivors.
