Anum Paramount Chief Calls for Collective Action to End Child Marriage and Teenage Pregnancy
The Paramount Chief of the Anum Traditional Area, Akusiaku Brempong Kumi Sasraku VIII, has urged traditional leaders, parents, guardians, and community stakeholders to join forces to eliminate child marriage and teenage pregnancy. He described the situation as harmful, unproductive, and unacceptable for a progressive traditional area like Anum.
The call was made at the end of a two-day capacity-building workshop for traditional leaders under the “One Paramountcy at a Time” initiative, supported by UNFPA and facilitated by the Obaapa Development Foundation. The training focused on strengthening leadership commitment to ending harmful cultural practices affecting girls.
The Paramount Chief stressed that teenage pregnancy and child marriage threaten the future of young girls and require urgent, coordinated action. As part of the response, the traditional council plans to introduce new bye-laws and submit them to the Asuogyaman District Assembly for approval to ensure stronger enforcement across all communities.
